The Grammys are handed out every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music professionals representing different genres across the industry. For multiple years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by clandestine nomination review committees, but the academy got rid of most of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large. Scroll down for our latest racetrack odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we’ll be updating this list throughout the season.
Not everyone in the industry appreciates the Grammys, though. At the 2021 awards The Weeknd didn’t get a single nomination despite an acclaimed album (“After Hours”) and a song (“Blinding Lights”) so popular that Billboard ranked it as their number-one single of 2021 and the number-one song of all time. The Weeknd blamed corruption, and other artists like Halsey and Drake have complained too. The Weeknd has since boycotted the awards. Drake has repeatedly declined consideration as well. And in 2024 Jay-Z, upon accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, shaded the Grammys for snubbing his wife Beyonce for Album of the Year time and time again.
In 2022, the first year without the committees, the Grammys expanded Album of the Year to 10 nominations, though that has since been contracted back down to eight. The winner ended up being “We Are” by Jon Batiste, which was a surprise against higher-profile hits. So even without the committees to uplift underdog recordings, voters don’t necessarily default to the most popular hit in the lineup. The 2023 awards were also surprising, ending in the coronation of Harry Styles (“Harry’s House”) over the aforementioned Beyonce (“Renaissance”) and Adele (“30”). And history was made in 2024 when Taylor Swift accepted the prize for “Midnights”; that was her fourth win, making her the most awarded performer in the history of the category.
Swift is eligible again for 2025. Will she just keep on winning?
