Twenty-two Memory of Hero Son Saddens Golden Wedding Anniversary Barraza Post His Memorial By FRANK AHLGREN The mood was festive, yet there was a feeling of sadness today in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nicolas Barraza. They were observing their 50th; wedding anniversary and while they acknowledged congratulations voiced by their children and friends they thought of their son, Willie Barraza, who died a hero in World War 1 II. The Willie I Barraza Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars here was named for him.

Mr. and Mrs. Barraza attended a mass at San Jose de Cristo Rey Church this morning and later entertained friends and relatives at a reception at the home at 321 Vista Hill drive. All He Wanted to Do Mn Barraza is 73, and his wife 64. They were married in Villa a Hidalgo, Durango, Mexico.

and came to the United States in 1913. Mr. Barraza was a farm worker then, and has been all his life until his retirement a few years ago. "It is all I ever wanted to do," he explained with simple dignity. "I a am a farm worker." Mr.

Barraza has another accomplishment, however, about which he is modest. He is the patriarch of a clan that includes seven sons, three daughters, 32 grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. The oldest grandson is 25. The youngest is two months old. All cf Mr.

Barraza's descendants recognize him as the patriarch; each kisses his hand on first greeting. It is the custom. They all live in the El Paso area except one son, Esteban, -who lives with his family in Los Angeles. Esteban is here for the anniversary occasion, however. Proud of Dead Son Mr.

and Mrs. Barraza are proud of their son who died fighting in Germany after the Normandy invasion. He enlisted in the Army in February, 1942, and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was killed in action on Sept. 27, 1944.

In 1948 a VFW post was established in Smeltertown and designated as his memorial. A picture of the handsome young soldier is kept in Mr. and Mrs. Barraza's bedroom without a speck of dust on the frame. Mrs.

Barraza brought the picture out to show, and her eyes filled with tears. "This is Willy," she said. Wants to Restore Grant County Officials Pay Cuts By United Press International SANTA FE, Feb, Fred W. Foster, Grants Democrat, has offered a plan to raise salaries of officials in his home county by placing them on an "advisory commission." Foster explained the bill he introduced yesterday this way: A drop in production last year by the Kennecott Copper Corp. lowered the county's assessed valuation just below the $45 million mark- dropping the county from Class to Class "1" status.

This automatically cut the pay of county officials. For instance, the sheriff now receives $5300 a year while at election time he expected to receive $7200. But now copper production is up again and so is the assessed valuation. But the county under law cannot switch back to its former status and salaries until 1960. Meanwhile, Foster wants to get the office holders paid at the usual rate by placing them on a paid advisory board to offset their salary cuts.
