What is the best route for Glacier Express? ›

Regarded as one of the most spectacular sections of the Glacier Express, the route between Preda and Bergün includes six towering viaducts, giving you an amazing view as you chug along.

Despite its wintry name, the Glacier Express runs all year long. Each season has its own charm: in spring, the Alpine meadows are abloom with wildflowers, while autumn gives you the stirring sight of the colourful autumn foliage against the contrasting backdrop of the snow-capped peaks.

A: If you're traveling from Zermatt to St. Moritz, the right side of the train provides the most stunning views. Of course, if you're going in the opposite direction, the views flip. We estimate about 85% of the most picturesque sights are on the right side.

Excellence Class A rail journey through the Swiss Alps has never been so luxurious. In the Excellence Class we guarantee you a window seat and a superb panoramic view while travelling across 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels between St. Moritz and Zermatt.

The full Glacier Express journey between Zermatt and St. Moritz is just under 8 hours. The journey between Brig and Chur is around 4 hours. The Glacier Express carves its way through the unforgettable mountain scenery of the Swiss Alps.

The Glacier Express Train journey offers a range of meal options, depending on the class of travel. Standard class passengers can purchase snacks and drinks from the bistro car, while First and Excellence class passengers are treated to complimentary gourmet meals and beverages.

But there's an alternative. The century-old, narrow-gauge Vigezzina-Centovalli railway – between Domodossola and Locarno in Switzerland – costs just €20. This route offers epic views for a fraction of the price of the Glacier Express.

There is a wheelchair compartment and a toilet suitable for use by disabled persons in the 1st class section of every Glacier Express train.

A trip on the Glacier Express is also a culinary highlight. Our dishes are prepared with great care in the on-board kitchen in the middle of the train. Enjoy regional specialities whilst the Alpine panorama unfolds outside. All dishes are freshly prepared with care on board and served directly at your seat.

This is a level above First Class and starts with brand new custom coaches built for the Glacier Express. The major difference is that unlike First Class, which has double seats on one side and a single seat on the other side of the aisle, Excellence Class has a single window seat on each side.

A ride on the Glacier Express is anything but fast. The 290-kilometer trip through the Swiss Alps takes over 8 hours, essentially an entire transatlantic flight within tiny landlocked Switzerland.

The train takes around eight hours to travel from Zermatt to St. Moritz, covering a distance of 180 miles.

The Bernina Express takes out top spot for the best views, because the variety of landscapes is so impressive for a reasonably short train journey. The Glacier Express is still stunning of course, but if you want to get the best views for your time and money, the Bernina Express comes first!
